UWW Senior World Championships Live Blog – Day 7

It’s been a monster day for the USA men’s freestyle team. Thomas Gilman (57kg), Kyle Dake (74kg) and J’den Cox (92kg) are in the semi-finals while Zain Retherford (70kg), Jordan Burroughs (79kg) and David Taylor battle for gold . The action begins at 10:45 a.m. EST.

SEMI-FINALS (57 kg): Thomas Gilman (USA) against Wanhao Zou (CHN), 8-2

First period: Gilman lands an out and an activity timer violation with 1:06 remaining for a 3-0 lead. Gilman uses relentless pace and forces an out for a 4-0 lead. Zou lands a takedown eight seconds from time and Gilman takes a 4-1 lead into the break.

Second period: Gilman scores on a body lock with less than two minutes remaining for a 6-1 lead. Gilman forces the pace and scores a second out of the period for an 8-1 lead with about a minute to go. Zou singles and scores an out but Gilman wins, 8-2, and will struggle in his third World Championship final.

SEMI-FINALS (74 kg): Kyle Dake (USA) against Yones Emamihoghaei (IRI), 2-2

First period: Emamichoghaei takes the first point on a activity clock violation for a 1-0 lead with one minute remaining. Emamichoghaei picked up another point on an outing seconds later for a 2-0 lead into the break.

Second period: Dake singles, raises and scores four out of bounds but Iran denies the call. The challenge is won so Dake leads 2-2 after receiving a warning and two. Dake holds on to win 2-2 on criteria after Emamichoghaei furiously tries to get a takedown. He will fight for his fourth world title tomorrow.

SEMI-FINALS (92 kg): J’den Cox (USA) against Osman Nurmagomedov (AZE), 7-0

First period: Cox scores first with an activity timer violation with 55 seconds remaining and takes a 1-0 lead into the break.

Second period: Cox scores on a single 15 seconds into the period for a 3-0 lead. Cox scores on a brace to extend their lead to 5-0 with 1:58 remaining. Cox recovers two on an exhibition of a whip to the chin late in the game for a 7-0 victory and a place in his third World Final.

GOLD MEDAL FINALS (70kg): Taishi Narikuni (JPN) vs. Zain Retherford (USA), 10-0

First period: Retherford is on a high crotch but Narikuni counters and after several seconds Narikuni gets the takedown and laces Retherford four times in a row for a 10-0 technical superiority victory. Retherford takes silver.

GOLD MEDAL FINALS (79 kg): Jordan Burroughs (USA) vs. Mohammad Nokhodilarimi (IRI)

GOLD MEDAL FINALS (86 kg): David Taylor (USA) vs. Hassan Yazdani Charati (IRI)
