Undrafted Free Agents Resist Bucs – JoeBucsFan.com
Undrafted free agents hold off Bucs
May 1, 2022
The lost decade of Bucs football is getting smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror.
This was on display yesterday when general manager Jason Licht sent his vice president of player personnel John Spytek to the media to lead Licht’s annual post-draft press conference.
Spytek referenced that filling the Bucs roster with a stack of undrafted free agents was proving to be a tough recruiting job. Guys hungry for long-term employment aren’t motivated to join the loaded Buccaneers.
“It’s a different era for Bucs. I mean, we’re just trying to fill [undrafted] free will right now and everyone is like, ‘Yeah, I don’t think so. You have quite a deep list,” Spytek said. “Five years ago, they were queuing up to come here. It’s like, ‘I had a chance to make this team.’
Joe remembers the days when youngsters Adam Humphries and Donteea Dye clung to spots on the roster, and the excitement surrounding undrafted signers like tight end Antony Auclair and Bobo Wilson.
That’s when the bar was much lower.
Hopefully the Bucs find a gem or two this weekend. There must be at least a few smart prospects who realize coming to Tampa is a great way to get noticed and coached well.
