The Newcastle United Blog | Newcastle’s league position becomes more tenuous after Molineux drama

The relegation battle just got a whole lot more interesting after Leeds’ dramatic win over Wolves last night. It was yet another Premier League game affected by a questionable refereeing decision.

Wolves stormed to a two-goal first-half lead with questionable defending from the visitors. Leeds had a mountain to climb but were given a helping hand when referee Kevin Friend showed Raul Jimenez a second yellow card early in the second half.

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier came out of his box to clear a ball that Jimenez was leaning on. The two collided in what looked like a clear 50/50 challenge. Both players received treatment with Meslier forced to retire.

However, Friend produced a yellow card for Jiminez, resulting in an early exit. Leeds fought back with three goals, including Luke Ayling’s stoppage-time winner for a massive three-pointer.

The win pushes Leeds seven points above the drop zone and just 2 points behind Newcastle, whose failure to get anything at Goodison Park has caused a bit more discomfort in our league standings. .

Another game that could impact Newcastle is Brentford’s trip to Leicester City tomorrow. The Bees can skip Newcastle with just a draw against the Foxes. Here’s a look at the Premier League standings.

club matches Goal difference Points
12 Leicester 26 -5 33
13 Brighton 29 -ten 33
14 Newcastle 29 -17 31
15 Brentford 29 -13 30
16 Leeds 30 -33 29
17 Everton 27 -18 25
18 watford 29 -26 22
19 Burnley 27 -16 21
20 Norwich 29 -45 17

The harsh truth is that Newcastle are going to have to save themselves. We need at least three more wins in the remaining nine matches. Hopefully we get the necessary points ahead of our trip to Burnley on the final day of this campaign.
