The Newcastle United Blog | Newcastle make offer for Germany U21 international defender

Newcastle are continuing their work in this month’s transfer market and there is now a report that we have offered £21million for Germany U21 international centre-back Felix Uduokhai.

The report is on Tuttomercatoweb and we’ve now taken an interest in several centre-backs in this window, none of whom could be signed – yet.

The report says Newcastle have been in contact with Augsburg over the past 24 hours and have offered €25m – around £20.8m for the left-footed centre-back.

Napoli are also interested, but wait – Augsburg want to keep Uduokhai until the summer, but money talks.

The 24-year-old 6ft4in defender (according to Wikipedia) has a Nigerian father and a German mother.

He’s played 62 times for Augsburg with a goal since signing for them from Wolfsburg in 2020, having been loaned out the previous season.

He played 6 times for the German U21 team and for the German Olympic team last year.

He cost Augsburg €9m (£7.5m) which would mean a quick profit of €16m for the German club.

Too bad our previous owner wasn’t the current owner of Augsburg – then the deal would go through at lightning speed.

There is information on the Bundesliga website as reported by the Boot Room:

“There are very few left-handed centre-backs at the top level at the moment, and so Uduokhai is a rare gem in that sense,”

“The Augsburg defender has also played left-back and defensive midfield during his career, but his home is in the center of defence.”

“Comfortable with both feet, the 23-year-old lines up on the left side of Augsburg’s central pair to make the most of his preferred foot.”

“That’s his key comparison with Bayern Munich’s Alaba, as well as his comfort playing from the back.”

“What makes Uduokhai a bit different is that he’s 6’2?, which makes him a real presence at the back and at the other end of the pitch with his height and aerial ability.”

If we can get him for around £20m, that would be a really good deal.
