The Newcastle United Blog | Newcastle could turn to former target following collapsed move – report

Newcastle can be determined to land a left-back this window despite plenty of options in Jamal Lewis, Paul Dummett, Javier Manquillo and Matt Ritchie. There is news from Italy that Newcastle are considering two other options following the failed Mitchel Bakker transfer.

Here’s a tweet from Sky Italy’s Rudi Galetti naming Sassuolo’s Rogerio and Atalanta’s Robin Gosens as options. He also claims that Bakker was unconvinced to join Newcastle despite having agreed a deal with Leverkusen.

Gosens made headlines on the day of Watford’s draw when Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb claimed Newcastle had offered to more than double the German’s salary. This report, however, revealed that contact has yet to be established between the clubs.

The 27-year-old is still out with a hamstring injury and has missed the last four months. As Galetti points out, this is cause for concern. He has just 18 months left on his contract and could hope for an exit this month.

The Rogerio link is interesting as Newcastle were close to signing the Brazilian in September 2020. However, Steve Bruce convinced Mike Ashley to spend that extra bit on Jamal Lewis.

The 24-year-old has continued as a starting left-back for Sassuolo, making 115 appearances since joining from Juventus in 2017, initially on a two-year loan. He would be a decent signing but not of the caliber of Gosens, who would be a statement type addition.

Rogerio is a very solid player who is excellent defensively. However, he is not the threat as Gosens is on the left flank. He struggles with his last ball and has only had 5 assists in the last five seasons, albeit in a more conservative system than Atalanta’s.
