Severe weather threat on Hampton Roads tonight

A powerful weather system will approach Hampton Roads tonight bringing a risk of severe to severe storms. All modes of severe weather will be possible – with strong damaging winds, hail and even a tornado or two.

THREATS: High winds, hail, single tornado or two

HOURLY: 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.

LOCATION: All Hampton Roads and NE NC

A warm front will rise northward in the region this afternoon. When this happens, showers and thunderstorms will form along the warm front. Some will become strong – with the potential to produce extreme weather conditions.

FutureTrak shows areas of thunderstorms developing this afternoon around 3 p.m. These would be isolated – not everyone seeing them. Later in the evening more widespread showers and thunderstorms will move in with areas of heavy rain and wind with them.

There is enough wind rotation in the atmosphere today to produce a tornado threat. Remember that while you should definitely be aware of the weather, there is no need to panic. Make sure you have at least 2 ways to get weather alerts this afternoon and stay tuned for us live and online throughout the evening as we watch for the threat of severe weather.

Remember, the safest place to be in severe weather and tornadoes is on the ground floor of your home. Keep away from windows. Put as many walls as possible between you and the outside. Cover your head with pillows or blankets.

If you have a family member or friend who doesn’t always check the weather, send them a quick text or call them this afternoon.
