Rainy day with a few heavy showers, isolated flooding

Get ready for a rainy day! Showers and a few thunderstorms are expected through Thursday with occasional pockets of heavy rain.

We are sitting in a moist air mass and this will allow us to see these heavy showers. If you walk outside this morning, the first thing you’ll notice is how humid it is (for March at least)!

Periods of rain are expected this morning, extending until lunchtime for some. This afternoon we will see a line of showers and thunderstorms forming along the cold front. This will pass in the middle or late afternoon.

Track the rain using our interactive radar or the WAVY Weather app.

Most areas should see 0.5 to 1.5″ of rain, but a few places could see higher totals. This is where the potential for flooding comes in. I don’t expect widespread flooding, but a few areas that have poor drainage issues may experience flooding. Remember, do not attempt to cross flooded roads!

One issue we can deal with today is what we call formation. Think of trains along a railway line. One car follows the other, right? Well, same concept in the atmosphere with ripple showers and thunderstorms. The showers follow one another, bringing rain again and again and again. This can lead to a threat of flooding.

In addition to the potential for heavy rain, there is also a low risk of a severe to severe storm today. Our region is in a level 1 severe weather hazard zone. The main impact, however, will be heavy rain.

The showers are decreasing this evening and Friday is looking pretty good! We will see highs in the 60s, with partly to mostly sunny skies. An isolated shower is possible on Saturday – before drier weather on Sunday.

We are getting much cooler late in the weekend and into next week!

Happy Thursday and stay dry!
