rain to snow; Possible flooding

We are starting the work week on an active note with a warm front rising during the day followed by a cold front late this evening. The warm front moving in during the day will provide mostly cloudy skies, scattered rain showers and gusty southeast winds of 10-20+ mph. Temperatures will warm to the upper 30s to mid 40s.

Temperatures will hover near freezing in northern New York during the first half of today’s disturbance, leading to the threat of a slight ice glaze/slippery patch. A winter weather advisory is in place until 1 p.m. to cover this risk of icing.

As we enter the second half of the day, temperatures will rise above freezing and scattered rain showers will be common. Between warmer air, precipitation, and melting snow and ice, flood watches have been issued for eastern New York, northern VT, and central VT until 8 a.m. Tuesday. Ice jams are possible and could create river level rises, so we will need to closely monitor this threat at least until tomorrow.

Today’s rain will change to a few flurries in the valleys and flurries in the mountains by overnight. Snow showers can reach up to two inches in the Adirondacks, southern Canada and the Northeast Kingdom.

We will dry out by Tuesday with a return to some sunshine and much colder temperatures. Tomorrow afternoon’s highs will only rise above the upper 20s to lower the 30s alongside a brisk northerly wind.
