PGA Tour Player Blog: My goal is to always do better every year, says world No.1 Jon Rahm
After last season’s success my goal is to beat him. My goal is always to do better every year. It’s hard to say because I had such a consistent year (15 top-10) and had a win, but I can tell you right away that I would happily take a little more inconsistency and that I would have more than one victory.
It all depends on how you categorize it. In the sport we play, it is difficult to only consider victories as successes. You can’t just think of a second place as a loss, can you? Obviously the goal in my mind is to have a better year.
Being the No. 1 in the world is something you have to earn. I’m No. 1 because of how I’ve played in the past so if I want to stay here I have to keep playing at the level and keep trying to improve.
At the end of the day, I can only focus on myself. I will try to improve my game and improve my golf level. If I can do this and play like I know I can play, everything else should take care of itself.
I don’t constantly think of “Oh, he’s # 2 or he’s coming for me or I have to do this or that.” “I try to play the best I can and hope to win a tournament. I hope I can have another quality year and win several times.
As of June 2020 we played a lot of golf and ended up having two wins and playing really good golf in the Majors. And then right away, when everyone has free time, I changed manufacturers and worked harder than I ever worked.
I didn’t want the club change to be an excuse so I did a lot of work and ended up playing well over the year. I was prepared for the first few months to be a little tough but all the hard work I put in paid off and I started right off the bat playing great golf and having a chance to win.
I had my moments with Covid-19, became a dad, won a US Open, played amazing golf, and then played a great Ryder Cup.
However, by the end of the Ryder Cup, I was exhausted from the year and a half before. I returned to Spain and just needed a break, not only for myself but also for my family.
We endured it together and I wanted to have the time to be a dad and be a husband and just be there for my wife and my son. I’m really glad I did because since he was born we had help at night and Kelley had help but I wasn’t a big help as I was competing and I had to sleep to be able to compete.
As soon as I got home I told Kelley that I wanted to be more involved, I wanted to help and during those two months I really, really, really enjoyed having to wake up a few times at night and take care of my son.
So that I can be there in the morning, feed him, bathe him at night and enjoy the simple things of parenting knowing that basically once he starts going to school I’m going to pretty much miss 50% of his life.
I really wanted to cherish these moments. I know I won’t regret the moment I decide to spend more time with my family.
For the first two weeks back home I was completely out of golf. I’ve always been to the gym and worked out just because it’s more of a mental thing. Then I slowly started playing games with my friends and then working out. But the first month was not very intense.
I now have a new pilot and new woods this year that I am still trying to get into. It’s a process to get everything approved but I really like it so far. I like the look, having a matte black rider because I’m a huge fan of matte colors.
