Newcastle United Blog | Newcastle’s double mission now half-done with Wood’s imminent arrival
With Crystal Palace at Brighton scheduled for Friday night, Newcastle must have Chris Wood checked in by noon tomorrow for him to be eligible for Watford. All indicators indicate that this is not a problem as he is currently undergoing his medical examination.
The Magpies moved quickly to catch the 30-year-old from relegation rivals Burnley. If Wood can hit the ground running, his goals could be the difference between survival and relegation.
This marks the second breakthrough in what has been a window of hard work. Newcastle are struggling to attract any of their center-back targets with moves for Sven Botman, Diego Carlos and Benoit Badiashile hitting stumbling blocks.
A few alternate targets in Feyenoord’s Marcos Senesi and Torino’s Gleison Bremer were tied on Tuesday. However, an Italian report claims Turin is set to agree on an extension with Bremer which would significantly increase the 24-year-old’s price.
Senesi, who has partnered with Fabrizio Coloccini at San Lorenzo, would cost around £ 18million according to Sport Witness, which cites numerous Dutch reports about our interest in Argentina.
A popular option could be Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic. The imposing Serbian would have been proposed to us recently. Fiorentina hope to cash in before the 24-year-old’s value drops due to his contract expiring in 18 months.
Newcastle have decided to add a forward and a center-back this week. The mission is partly accomplished with all but vanished hopes that a defender can be embarked in the coming days.
Newcastle are also expected to miss Everton left-back Lucas Digne. Aston Villa have reportedly reached an agreement on a permanent transfer for the 28-year-old. It doesn’t appear he was open to a move to Newcastle.
Once Wood is signed, the focus will be entirely on Saturday’s six points against Watford. Then, early next week, Newcastle are set to make breakthroughs on a center-back. There are many targets, but reaching a deal has proven to be a very difficult task.
