The move came quickly when Newcastle triggered a release clause, which was confirmed by Burnley, in Wood’s contract on Tuesday. It’s been a whirlwind of several days for the Kiwi as he follows Kieran Trippier through the gate as a crucial signing of the new era.
Here’s what the 30-year-old, who will wear the number 20 shirt, said about his Newcastle United membership:
“It is a very exciting opportunity for me and I am delighted to be a Newcastle United player.
“I’ve played at St. James’ Park a few times and it’s an amazing place, so having the chance to represent this club with these amazing supporters behind me and my teammates is very special.
“The club and the manager have been top notch during this process, and I can’t wait to step onto the pitch and restore the confidence they have in me, especially with a vital part of the season ahead. . “
Wood is a confirmed Premier League goalscorer with over 50 goals at Turf Moor. He joins in time to play a role in our six-point game against Watford on Saturday. Our desperate need for goals played a major role in this signing.
Head coach Eddie Howe is delighted to have an experienced striker like Wood on board. Here’s what he said about his last signing:
“Chris is an important signing for us at a crucial time and I’m very happy that we were able to act quickly and bring him here.
“He’s a very dangerous offensive threat, he’s got a physique and a character that I really like, and he’s got a lot of Premier League experience. He’ll be perfect for us.”
It could be a very nifty addition to Newcastle’s survival push. Wood is experienced, painful for defenders, and can find the bottom of the net. Hopefully he will be a sure hit on Tyneside and score some of the goals to get us to safety.
