‘MUST GIVE UP’ – STAR REVEALS ESCAPE ACTION AS WET WEATHER TAKES HARM IN PRACTICE

The Supercars grid is prepared for the “tricky” conditions that will await them for the first race of the 2022 season, as wet weather threatens to take its toll.

In Friday’s two practice sessions, defending champion Shane van Gisbergen and Anton De Pasquale both lost the lead, with the latter’s off-track mishap forcing red flags and ending the second session early.

Speaking about van Gisbergen’s surprising mistake, Supercars Hall of Famer Mark Skaife remarked in a comment that “you don’t see this often”, insisting he didn’t remember of the last time he had seen the Kiwi spinning.

However, van Gisbergen was optimistic that his performance would improve when it mattered most.

“Good session, we were fast, we were up there but we didn’t put the tire on,” van Gisbergen said. supercars.com.

“We tried another change when everyone ran tires and then at the end I got the red flag and a car spun in front of me so I had to bail out.

“I think we are quite quick, we were quick in both sessions today so we will go back tomorrow and see what the weather will be like.”

De Pasquale, who was fastest in the first practice session, went wide at Turn 1 and ended up flying through the muddy grass off the track as he prepares for the ever-changing conditions who are waiting for him.

“I ran a bit wide and grabbed some grass where everything was wet,” De Pasquale said.

“We’ll see what tomorrow brings with the weather and the track with the changing conditions, which mixes everything up.”

Teammate Will Davison called the practice sessions “difficult” but was positive about the condition of their car and its potential to give the Shell V-Power Racing team a strong finish.

“Tough conditions to master the weather and wet areas in the various corners,” Davison said.

“In Practice 2 we had a solid race but unfortunately we couldn’t complete our last lap due to the red flag with just under a minute left in the session.

“Overall I’m happy with the car’s position and we’ll look at some things and come back tomorrow.”

Chaz Mostert was the fastest man on the grid in the second practice session and will no doubt want to continue his momentum in the first race of the season.
