Florida senator proposes revisions to SNAP requirements for the state

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) has introduced legislation that would change the requirements for receiving federal welfare benefits and SNAP. Titled “Let’s Get to Work Act of 2022,” the bill proposes changes to provisions of the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 and the Families First Coronavirus Response Act of 2021, WFLA News Channel 8 reports.

Scott proposes adding work requirements for SNAP recipients who are able-bodied and have no dependents (ABAWD). WFLA News reported that under pandemic legislation, the age requirements for able-bodied adults to receive SNAP benefits allow those aged 50 or older to apply (reduced from age 60) , even if they have no dependents.

Scott’s proposed legislation would make these changes to SNAP eligibility:

• End the current suspension of SNAP work requirements for ABAWDs.
• Extend SNAP work requirements to able-bodied adults ages 50-59 and parents of children over age 6 (except parents of children under age 6 and caregivers disabilities).
• End “no cause” exemptions to the SNAP ABAWD work requirement that allow states to circumvent SNAP work requirements.
• Make improvements to work requirements by addressing the marriage penalty and increasing the grace period for parents:
  • One spouse would be exempt from work requirements if the other meets them.
  • Increase the “window of grace” for parents with dependents who do not meet the work requirement from 3 months over a 3-year window to 6 months over 3 years to account for additional household complexities.
