“A gift to Maltese women”

9:20 a.m. Independent candidate Arnold Cassola said in a statement that Monday’s court ruling which established he can challenge a gender balancing mechanism was “a gift to Maltese women on International Women’s Day “.

“The PN and the PL had concocted a plan between them to consolidate their hold on the Maltese parliament, ensuring that they each got six more female MPs,” Cassola said.

In reality, the gender correction mechanism only favors PL and PN women and excludes all other independent-minded Maltese women from the benefit of the cooptation mechanism,” he said.

9am Hello and welcome to our campaign day 16 live blog.

We have not yet been informed of the events of the Labor Party’s election campaign this morning, but Prime Minister Robert Abela will speak in Żabbar in the evening.

PN leader Bernard Grech will visit the new premises of the Maltese Union of Midwives and Nurses in Qormi at 10am. In the evening he will address an event in Żebbuġ.

Also starting today, the Broadcasting Authority’s political broadcasts.

A one-hour debate on the theme ‘Malta Together’ will be broadcast on TVM and Radio Malta at 8.45pm.

Miriam Dalli and Rebecca Buttigieg will represent the Labor Party and Claudette Buttigieg and Joseph Grech will represent the Nationalist Party.
