Houston Texans head coach news: Kevin O’Connell interviewed
Adam Schefter reported Thursday that your Houston Texans interviewed Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell at some point this week.
Add another candidate to the Texans roster: Rams general manager Kevin O’Connell.

O’Connell and the Rams are coming off a playoff win over Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With the addition of Matthew Stafford and the grand arrival of Cooper Kupp as one of the league’s deadliest receivers, the Rams offense sits comfortably in the top ten in yards and points while well positioned to potentially play in the Super Bowl.
O’Connell was previously the Washington Redskins’ offensive coordinator in 2019 before moving to Los Angeles in 2020. In his freshman year in Washington, he was responsible for one of football’s worst offenses. To his credit, he had to take out Case Keenum and Dwayne Haskins with Adrian Peterson in the backfield during that season and Washington was an overall mess.
In 2020, O’Connell improved but still landed as the 22nd ranked team in points and 11th ranked team in yards. The Rams succeeded by having the defense ranked number one in the league and had to settle for Jared Goff as a signalman. Matthew Stafford turned out to be a revelation on Jared Goff.
With the Texans, O’Connell would find himself in a completely different situation. This team is not yet in a position to rank among the top 15 offenses or defenses in the league. However, with a hand full of NFL Draft cards and a young quarterback at Davis Mills, there could be something to develop over the next two to three years. As a former NFL quarterback himself, O’Connell could prove to be a valuable asset in eventually developing Davis Mills and developing his potential.
That said, his team is still in the playoffs and will be busy for a few more weeks. With the coaching carousel still spinning and more candidates finding their homes, the Texans might be waiting for their guy to open up. That’s if he doesn’t decide to stay put.
