Hischier gets deserved recognition | BLOG

Captain of the Devils Nico Hischier is having a landmark season for his team. Over the past five games, Hischier has scored five goals and is on a four-game goal streak. Because of this strong performance, Hischier was named the NHL’s third star for the week of February 14.

“This year on the power play, on the power play, (he’s) this guy we rely on for all faceoffs,” Ruff said of Hischier. “He’s also managed to score goals, so he really does everything for us, and that’s really what you expect from your managers.”

“He’s had a good streak here of playing good games and real solid hockey for us. When Hischier is healthy and at his best, he’s one of the most dominant two-way players, and he doesn’t get enough recognition for that,” Severson said after the announcement. “That’s our captain, he’s a great leader, he’s also come a long way and he deserves the recognition he’s getting.”

Hischier is very proud of his two-way game and it’s something he has focused on over the years.

“I’ve worked on that all my career. I think already coming into the league it was something that I tried to work on a lot. I want to be that center that it doesn’t matter whether you’re in up or down, the coach can put you there and help the team in all areas.

“I’m very proud of my defensive game and I work on it every day… I just want to bring consistent play in the d-zone every night for our team.”

With 13 goals and 17 assists for 30 points, the center is second in goals and points for New Jersey. Hischier is the second Devils player to receive NHL recognition this season, joining Jack Hughes with league honors.
