83′ – KWP plays Broja, he tries to find the far post but it’s wide. He’s now going for Shane Long.

78′ – Everton’s defense returns to shambolic best, and KWP have another chance to shoot, Pickford saves again. He’s mad at his defense and so are we.

75′ – Dele in place of Gordon, and it looks like Richy will come out wide on the left.

73 ‘ – KWP jumps by Coleman, returns to shoot and his shot is deflected by Holgate, and Pickford already on his knees reacts brilliantly to save!

67′ – Richarlison takes the ball away from Romeu, and Gomes gives it back immediately!! Needs Pickford’s intervention to clear it up.
And now Gomes is conceding another stupid foul, and Madley has warned him he’ll go into the book next time. Paul Clément calls the midfielder and speaks to him sternly. He’s been a nuisance since he came on at the break.

65′ – One way or another, it’s still 1-0. A great JWP outswinger in the box, two completely unmarked Saints players running on the free kick and they get in each other’s way, and Elyounoussi’s header jumps off the bar and more.
Townsend is on, it’s Iwobi off.

62′ – Everton’s fade continues and the Saints attack en masse, and a shot from Armstrong grazes the bar. The Blues are just lost right now and it looks like Andros Townsend is coming.

60′ – Romeu has been the best player on the mile-long pitch, at the heart of everything the Saints have done both defensively and offensively. Everton did not have an answer for him.

58′ – JWP with a delicious ball behind the defense and Adams flick is straight on Pickford, Everton lucky there.

56 ‘ – Iwobi again free on the right, catches the wrong pass, van de Beek’s shot is blocked, falls on Gomes and his attempt to redeem is lamentable.

52′ – Iwobi steps in to steal the ball through the middle and finds Richy in space on the right, his cross into the box is just past DCL who steams in.
Gomes quickly loses the ball in a dangerous spot, tries to claim a foul and Madley isn’t interested. Romeu finds Adams who places Armstrong and he beats Pickford at the near post. Poor goalkeeper too, the Saints lead 1-0.

47′ – Iwobi plays in DCL, his shot blocks Salisu and goes out for a corner. Taken aback, and center all the same in the surface of van de Beek is missed by Richarlison and Dom puts his head on it and it’s a goal!! No, clearly offside, argh. Excellent comeback from the Blues.

46 ‘ – Second half in progress, and Andre Gomes is in place of Allan who really had a nightmare in the first half.

Half-time thoughts – Everton have really sat down and allowed Southampton to grow in the game after a strong start. The hosts had the best chance and Frank Lampard knows he will have to make a change or two sooner rather than later.

45′ – Both teams struggled to deliver that last ball or get that effective finishing touch in the box. More than a minute to add. And there is the whistle at halftime, 0-0.

40′ – Van de Beek has the ball close to the box after a decent passing streak but his final pass is inaccurate and clear.

39′ – Chance for KWP, his first shot is blocked but the ball lands on him and he misses the near post.
Calvert-Lewin booked for a bad late challenge on Salisu. It deserved it.

36′ – Broja fakes Kenny and can shoot from a tight angle, Keane over to choke him, corner. Overhit, comes to Romeu on the edge of the box and he’s unmarked, crosses instead of shooting and Bednarek takes a header and it’s over the bar, but he was also offside.
The Blues have only 41% of ball possession after having mastered the first minutes.

34′ – Now Elyounoussi crosses the box and his shot is blocked by Keane. The Toffees have really settled into defensive form here and aren’t doing much with the ball anymore.

32′ – Saints’ corner on Everton on the left now. JWP outswing, Livramento alone in the six-yard box and touches it and Pickford does well to save! The Blues were caught napping, expecting a deeper aerial ball.

28 ‘- Elyounoussi shot captured by Pickford. Now another Saints attack down the Blues’ right, blocked by Holgate and the home side want a penalty. Andy Madley deadpan. Holgate’s arm was very clearly inside his body shape, not at all like what happened on the other side of the pitch.

25′ – Nicely worked by the Blues, and Gordon’s cross is deflected in and Forster can recover safely.

23 ‘ – Adams takes a corner on Holgate on the right of Everton. Inswinger Ward-Prowse, and again straight to Pickford.
The Blues started well and are slightly the better team here halfway through the first half, although the Saints came into the game having slept for around ten minutes.

17′ – Allan crosses Stuart Armstrong and the Saints player falls to the ground and it’s a free kick from the kind of position that James Ward-Prowse likes. This is a problem for the Blues. About where Trippier scored against the Blues, but he goes to the far post which Pickford has covered, pushes it away for a corner. The corner is straight into the six-yard box and Pickford collects comfortably.

15′ – Everton’s high-press recovers the ball but Calvert-Lewin loses the ball. Allan slips in to stop a falling Walker-Peters and the Brazilian is booked.

11 ‘ – Everton are happy on their right, repelling Kyle Walker-Peters and Mohammed Elyounoussi.
Van de Beek’s shot from the edge of the box is blocked.

8 ‘- Richarlison gets a free kick on the right edge of the surface of Salisu. In the box and erased. Good start for the Blues.

6′ – Saints’ quick counter and Che Adams finds Armando Broja in space, he passes Michael Keane but Jordan Pickford comes out to clear.

4′ – A center in the area comes out of Romeu’s arm and the Blues want a penalty! The ball falls on Donny van de Beek and his shot is wide. VAR is looking at this and somehow a penalty is NOT given? !

2′- Great opportunity for Richarlison in the area but the ball escapes him and the hosts can clear.
Now Anthony Gordon falls into the box but the referee sees no reason to whistle. The youngster looked like he was trying to win a penalty there. The Blues win a corner on the right but it’s poor and clear.

Frank Lampard left with an unchanged line-up for today’s away game. After yesterday’s freak storm it looks like many train and bus services are still not on track and hundreds of Evertonians stranded in London and many other places with no way to get to St. Mary’s have been reported. Stay safe Blues!

Everton produced their best performance of the season so far in a delightful win over Leeds United last weekend at Goodison Park. Now they have to go on the road and show they can maintain that level of play against a stronger opponent in Southampton, who are healthy themselves.

The team’s fitness picture hasn’t improved this week for Frank Lampard, but the new manager would have appreciated the extra time to drill his squad – it’s easy to forget he’s not at the working here for less than three weeks.

The Saints are in good physical shape and pose a threat with their fast and dynamic 4-2-2-2 in just about every game they play. They will be thinking of taking advantage of a Toffees side well below them in the table even as they chase a slightly unlikely European spot.
