El Leñador wins the prizes

Bilingual Cal Poly Humboldt student-run newspaper El Leñador and its staff won numerous awards, including the “People’s Choice” award in the Best of Show category, at a university press conference earlier this this month.

The article published in English and Spanish also won first place for Best Special Issue/Section, Best Arts & Entertainment Story, and Best Illustration, along with other nods to the work of the staff. in photography, computer graphics and feature film writing.

“El Leñador has been rewarded for all our passion and hard work. It filled my soul as a journalist with happiness and enthusiasm to do more,” said co-editor Karina Ramos Villalobos, who won the top prize for best arts and entertainment story.

Ramos Villalobos joined El Leñador reporter Ricardo Lara Nava and public relations manager Steffi Puerto to present a workshop at the Associated Collegiate Press conference on their work publishing a bilingual monthly publication that focuses its coverage on Latinx and various communities.

“El Leñador makes an effort to publish local news in Spanish due to the lack of information for local Spanish speakers in Humboldt County,” Lara Nava said. “We are a small team that wears many hats to get the paper out.”

ARCATA, Calif. — El Leñador, Cal Poly Humboldt’s bilingual student-run newspaper, won first place in the “People’s Choice” award in the Best of Show category at the Associated Collegiate Press national conference in Long Beach on March 5. The paper also won three first-place awards in the California College Media Association’s 2022 national competition and those awards were presented at the same conference.


The English and Spanish newspaper, which focuses on coverage of Latinx and diverse communities, won top awards for Best Special Issue/Section, Best Arts & Entertainment Story, and Best Illustration. The staff also won five additional awards.

El Leñador staff Ramos Villalobos, journalist Ricardo Lara Nava and public relations manager Steffi Puerto also held a workshop during the ACP conference on how they produce a bilingual university news publication.
