Four months after Spotify launched its virtual Spotify Island on Roblox, Spotify has launched Planet Hip-Hop – a space-themed virtual place.
Spotify‘s Planet Hip-Hop is now available on Roblox. Their goal is to give a younger generation of hip-hop fans new ways to connect with their favorite musical artists through virtual experiences.
In fact, Planet Hip-Hop featured up-and-coming rapper Doechii yesterday (9/22)!
Spotify’s hip-hop planet
While exploring Planet Hip-Hop, Roblox players can collect exclusive virtual goods, customize their vehicles in the “Speed Shop”, and dance on a floating dance floor.
But they can even create their own hip-hop beats in what might be one of the coolest features, powered by Soundtrap.
We wanted to create a space inspired by the new era of hip hop, exploring how the current generation of artists and fans are redefining what the genre looks and sounds like.
Steven Conaway, Senior Artistic Director at Spotify
The futuristic look of Spotify’s new virtual island draws inspiration from the younger generation of hip-hop artists with their “internet tech sound”.
Conaway went on to reference young artists like Doechii, Yeat and Trippie Redd.
Spotify Island features an illuminated cityscape that rests on an upside-down silver pyramid surrounded by disc-like rings of red planets!
If you feel like it, you can drive your custom car around the rings of the planet, associate creative director Edward Yeung also explained.
He went on to say that Spotify would also build obstacle courses on the planetary rings!
Plus, players can access exclusive Planet Hip-Hop merchandise! Items such as clothing emotes and parkour effects will be available for purchase. Roblox players can collect hearts to purchase the product.
And players will be able to get their hands on a patchwork bubble jacket and moon shoes for their avatar in a few weeks.
They are also launching more vehicle customization options in the “Speed Shop”. New themed vehicles representing future musical artists joining the virtual world will also be available, such as Doechii’s alligator car.
“Spotify chose the hip-hop genre as Spotify Island’s second destination based on listener demand,” reports Tech Crunch.
In fact, Spotify bragged that hip-hop music generates 44 billion average monthly streams on Spotify globally in its press release for the island.
Spotify plans to continue adding collaborations with yet to be announced hip-hop artists to Planet Hip-Hop.
