Blog: Stubborn clouds make Monday gloomy

Before pouring a generous amount of dressing over your salad, you typically shake the bottle to mix the olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The rich flavors of balsamic vinegar are separated under a layer of extra virgin olive oil before you blend in, and in a way, it’s our time for the next day.

A cool, rich, moist air mass settled over Hampton Roads due to the lingering northeast breeze. The clouds, fog and drizzle associated with the rich air (much like savory balsamic is trapped under a layer of extra virgin olive oil) are stuck close to the surface. So our weather, to put it briefly, is gloomy.

We will have to mix the air for the sun to return to Hampton Roads, but that may not happen until Tuesday and Wednesday when a southerly breeze picks up. Until then, the two stubborn low pressure areas stationed off our coasts are keeping clouds around for at least the next 24 to 36 hours.

Tonight expect reduced visibility, drizzle and poor conditions. Lows are holding in the 50s. It will be another gloomy day tomorrow with drizzle and fog likely early before lingering clouds carry us through the afternoon. Highs will stay in the mid 60s – there could be some sunshine for places further inland.

Clouds are likely to hold Tuesday morning as the northerly breeze continues – drizzle, mist and a shower or two are also possible Tuesday morning. The two stubborn low pressure areas are finally starting to lose their grip on Hampton Roads so we can get some cloud breaks later on Tuesday. We will likely have some sunshine to come back on Wednesday as a southerly breeze brings our temperatures back into the low 70s.
