Hastings St. Cecilia’s lethal half-opening combination of Carson Kudlacek to Cooper Butler was as good as it gets, as the Bluehawks overwhelmed a young Kearney Catholic team 49-7 on a magnificent comeback night .

The deadly tie between St. Cecilia Kudlacek and Butler struck early for a pair of 1st quarter touchdowns covering 36 and 63 yards to set the tone for this one as the black-clad Bluehawks took a 27-0 lead at halftime and never looked back.

Cooper Butler, who does a bit of everything on both sides of football, showed off some of his overall superior skills on the 63-yard goal, snatching a slightly overturned ball in the air followed by a brief juggling act amazing before reducing. across the field for a 50+ yard sprint after catching the pass.

Butler, who also displayed blistering speed and big hands, had 6 receptions for 149 yards and a pair of touchdowns through the air well before halftime. The 175-pound eldest didn’t even have to catch a 2nd half pass to register what would be an outstanding all-game stat for most players.

And Carson Kudlacek! The senior gunslinger completed his first 7 passes, 5 of which went to Butler for 172 yards, and that pair of killer strikes to Cooper.

When the game was on the books, Kudlacek, who completed 63% of his passes for 1,296 yards with 17 touchdowns coming, connected 16 of 20 passing attempts for 295 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Meanwhile, the St. Cecilia defense, led by the hard-pressed headhunter himself, Brady Rutt (#52), snuffed out anything and everything Kearney’s Catholic offense tried in the 1st half.

The big 230-pound Caden Krikac (#56) was also not the least hospitable to the Stars from his position at linebacker.

That coupled with Butler’s defensive play and fast Chase Evans,

helped keep the visiting Stars to 19 yards rushing and 42 through the air in the first half.

Carson Kudlacek continued his air show in the second half, this time turning to another speed demon, Jenson Anderson. The St. Cecilia flyer (No. 3) caught three passes for 70 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown reception.

Jenson Anderson’s top of the line, lightning speed was truly on display after Kearney Catholic finally put one on the board with a nifty touchdown pass with 3:11 left in the contest.

In the ensuing kickoff, Jenson, one of the most feared returning men in the C-2 class, kicked off on his own 13, fired up the Anderson jets and sprinted undamaged. , 87 yards for the score in the middle of the pristine Duncan Field grass.

Freshman quarterback Dominic Nowak, a petite 5-9 and 135 pounds, came on to start the second half for coach Rashawn Harvey, completing 5 of 11 passes for 70 yards and that sweet 52-yard strike. against Stars running back Tyson Redinger.

Nowak really impressed me with his arm. The dude can flat throw him a country mile and will be a force the next three years for Kearney Catholic if, starter Carson Murphy suffers an injury.

It was all Bluehawks in this one tonight. Carson Kudlacek 295 yards through the air and 59 yards on 9 rushes led the way for St. Cecilia. I had St. Cecilia for an unofficial total of 417 yards. The “D” Bluehawks unofficially held Kearney Catholic to 160 total yards, including 110 through the air.

The only downside I saw tonight for St. Cecilia was the slew of penalties, some of which were of the 15-yard variety likely characteristic of a Hastings St. Cecilia/Kearney Catholic battle, although the Bluehawks won’t haven’t met the Stars on the gridiron since opening the 2011 season with a 24-14 win over the Stars, their only game with a C-1 class team that season.

St. Cecilia improves to 6-0 with the win and travel to Wood River to meet the surprising Eagles 5-1 next Friday. Wood River beat the GICC 34-7 Friday night in GI.

Kearney Catholic dives to 3-3 and will have a 5-1 home game against Ord, who had to rally to defeat an ever-improving Amherst side 41-10. The Chants actually trailed Amherst 10-6 at one point in the game.
