The Panthers defense will be without its top two tackles in Luvu and Woods. Carolina also placed starting safety Jeremy Chinn on IR earlier this week. 49ers advantage.
12:59 We’re going to learn a lot about the 2022 San Francisco 49ers in these next two games. Both are matchups that the contenders pull off.
1:05 The 49ers will be on offense to start the game.
1:08 Much has been said this week about the use of George Kittle. Shanahan calls her number twice on the opening disc.
1:11 Garoppolo to Tevin Coleman on a screen pass down the right side for the touchdown from nine yards. 49ers quickly increased by seven. They take advantage of Carolina missing both safeties and their best linebacker with a 41-yard bolt from Jeff Wilson Jr. and a 20-yard catch from George Kittle.
1:16 Jimmie Ward, Talanoa Hufanga and Tashaun Gipson all on the field to start this game for the 49ers defense.
1:17 Stop me if you’ve heard this before, the 49ers defense forces a three and out.
Christian McCaffrey picked up nine yards on the first down. Following an incompleteness by Baker Mayfield on second down, Carolina returned to McCaffrey who was stuffed for no gain by Charvarius Ward. Excellent cornerback run defense.
1:25 The only way this game is close is if the 49ers get there. George Kittle catches a pass from Garoppolo and fumbles after picking up eight yards. The Panthers will take over at their own 44.
The 49ers offense has now fumbled the ball in four of the first five games.
1:32 The Panthers offense moves the ball into the end zone, but Eddy Pineiro misses wide on the left at 41 yards.
Christian McCaffrey could be a problem for the 49ers today if this game remains close.
1:37 Teven Coleman with a nice hold over a Panthers defenseman for a 30 win. Jimmy Garoppolo was drilled as he let that pass through.
1:44 The 49ers offensive line ends the drive. Mike McGlinchey is called down the field to erase a 16-yard completion that would have put them on all four Panthers. On third down, Jaylon Moore is beaten by Brian Burns for a sack.
Robbie Gould hits from 49 yards to give the 49ers a 10-0 lead.
1:48 Excellent coverage by the 49ers defense on first down leads to a Mayfield sack by Talanoa Hufanga. Next game Mayfield with a dime to Robbie Anderson to beat Charvarius Moore cover for a 32 win.
Jimmie Ward is OUT with a hand injury.
1:52 Illegal contact called Emmanuel Moseley. Easy to see. The 49ers get a break on the next game with a hold called on the Panthers left tackle.
1:57 The Panthers feed the ball to the 49ers 25 and Pineiro does not miss this time, striking from 43 yards to make it 10-3.
2:04 Faced with third and five, Jimmy Garoppolo is forced to get the ball out quickly and Brandon Aiyuk is unable to follow him while spinning. Not Garoppolo’s best placement.
San Francisco beats Carolina’s punt to the seven.
2:08 Akeem Spence starts this streak at defensive tackle for the 49ers. Chases the running back to make the tackle on a screen after a six on second down.
2:09 DeMeco Ryans sends pressure on third down and Baker Mayfield is forced to throw it away. It’s the second three and out for the 49ers defense today.
San Francisco will take over with a good field position at its 46.
2:20 Carolina blocks the field goal from 42 yards. Another missed opportunity for points by the 49ers offense.
San Francisco picked up 23 rushing yards to open up possession. Jimmy Garoppolo then throws a pair of checks before hitting Kittle for five on third and ten to set up the placement try.
2:25 With the attack struggling, Emmanuel Moseley steps up and scores for them from 41 yards out after netting a knockdown from Baker Mayfield. 49ers 17 Panthers 3.
2:32 The 49ers defense is holding. San Francisco comes in at halftime 17-3. As long as the 49ers have the ball, this game is over.
2:45 San Francisco’s kickoff team allows a 45-yard return to open the second half. A few quick Baker Mayfield accomplishments and the Panthers are already at the 49ers 28.
2:51 Carolina goes there on fourth down and Christian McCaffrey scores from 19 yards out.
Matt Rhule decides to go for two, and the 49ers defense comes in with the stoppage. 49ers 17 Panthers 9
3:07 San Francisco’s offense opens the second half with one of its best drives of the year. They rushed for 75 yards in 10 plays, finishing with a four-yard touchdown from Garoppolo to Samuel.
They had two big games in a row to get there. Kyle Shanahan decided to go for it in the fourth and third, leading to pass interference from Carolina. On the next play, Garoppolo hit Jauan Jennings in the middle and the wide blasted his way through the Panthers defense for a 32 win.
49ers 24 Panthers 9
3:10 Carolina with its second big kickoff return of the day, this one goes for 48. A pass from Mayfield to Smith on Deommodore Lenoir goes for 31 and puts the Panthers inside the 49ers 20.

3:29 Jeff Wilson Jr. ends the 12 game, 75-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. Wilson has 97 yards on 16 carries today. It’s the best he’s watched since 2020. The 49ers lead 30-12.
4:00 The 49ers defense almost saves. They had Mayfield in the end zone, but he was able to slip away until Drake Jackson wrapped him for a sack four.
