49ers – Live Blog of Rams
This is the live blog post from the San Francisco 49ers (9-7) Week 18 game with the Los Angeles Rams (12-4) from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.
The 49ers can secure a berth in the NFC playoffs with a win or loss to New Orleans.
12:00 Trent Williams, K’Waun Williams, Azeez Al-Shaair, Marcell Harris, Maurice Hurst and Jarrod Wilson are OFF today for the 49ers.
Not having Trent Williams is a big blow to the 49ers offense. Los Angeles have a formidable pass rush and running to their ends worked well for the 49ers in Week 10.
Without K’Waun Williams, the question for the San Francisco defense is who will play the slot and cover Cooper Kupp? Kupp has been the NFL’s top wide receiver this season and the 49ers will be juggling high school. This does not sound good.
12:10 QB Bryce Perkins, OLB Chris Garrett, OLB Terrell Lewis, OL Alaric Jackson, OL Tremayne Anchrum Jr., TE Brycen Hopkins
1:05 Colton McKivitz will start on the left tackle on Jaylon Moore. It’s an interesting decision.
1:24 The 49ers win the toss and defer to the second half. They will start in defense.
1:26 Great coverage on the opening kickoff for the 49ers. Rams start inside their own 15.
1:27 Dontae Johnson is lined up in the slot, replacing K’Waun Williams who is inactive today.
1:37 San Francisco The defense begins as she played in the second half at Tennessee, allowing two long conversions in the third down as the Rams enter the 20-yard line. At third and sixth in the 49ers 15, Arik Armstead, Arden Key and Samson Ebukam pulled off a strong pass rush and engulfed Matthew Stafford for a 10 loss to force a field goal attempt.
Rams 3 49ers 0
1:45 The 49ers pick up a first try, but are then forced to kick. Whenever No.44 gets on the move, the defense knows where the race is going, and the Rams did a good job ending the San Francisco race game in that first series.
1:51 The first quarter ends with Matthew Stafford hitting Cooper Kupp to convert third and four. The 49ers were in the zone and Kupp just sat in the hole making for an easy pitch and catch.
2:01 Rams come down the field for the second straight possession, this time ending practice with a touchdown pass from Stafford to Tyler Higbee on 4th and 1 of 49ers 2.
Without K’Waun Williams, the 49ers’ defense is stuck in the playing area, and Stafford is just dicing them. Sounds like a long day ahead.
San Francisco allowed Los Angeles to convert five of the seven 3rd downs in addition to the 4th conversion for a touchdown.
2:07 The 49ers’ offense recedes. Garoppolo is hit and fumbles on the first try. On the second try, Garoppolo was sacked for a loss of three, then Elijah Mitchell was dropped for a loss of two.
Los Angeles then returns the punt to the 49ers 19.
The 49ers special teams have been bad all season and that just might be the straw that broke the camel’s back if the Rams can hit this for a touchdown.
2:10 And they do. Matthew Stafford hits Higbee 15 yards for another Rams touchdown.
If the 49ers can’t score a near-10 touchdown before half-time, that game is over.
2:18 The 49ers’ offense hits midfield, then Jimmy Garoppolo throws another first interception. Try to throw the game action deep and the ball floats into Taylor Rapp’s hands.
2:22 It doesn’t matter who plays the 49ers quarterback today. Their defense cannot go off the field. Stafford to Beckham Jr. to convert another 3rd down. The Rams are now 6-8 for 3rd in the first half.
2:28 Nick Bosa offers a sack at 3rd and 1st to end the Rams’ possession. The 49ers will take over when they are 15 with 38 seconds left in the first half.
Can Jimmy Garoppolo do something here?
2:40 Garoppolo is able to hit Aiyuk with two big throws down the middle to put the 49ers in position for a shot at the end of the half. Its good. The 49ers enter at halftime 17-3.
2:44 The Saints lead Atlanta 17-6 with just over a minute left in the first half.
2:54 San Francisco reduced the lead to seven in the opening practice of the second half. Garoppolo hits JaMycal Hasty for 13 to convert third and three. On the next game he found Brandon Aiyuk all alone on the left side for a gain of 31.
Of the Rams 16, Deebo Samuel goes over the right guard and stretches the ball across the goal line.
Now the 49ers’ defense must stop.
3:00 And they do. DeMeco Ryans puts up a nice blitz on the third down and Dr. Greenlaw bursts into the Rams’ offensive line to put pressure on Matthew Stafford until he’s incomplete.
Maybe this game is not over yet. Big possession ahead for the 49ers offensive.
3:11 What a job for the 49ers offensive. San Francisco runs the ball in the first 10 games of possession before Deebo Samuel throws a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jauan Jennings to tie the game at 17.
Kyle Shanahan with a nice adjustment in the second half. In the first half, the 49ers ran in the direction of motion almost every time. So far in the second half they have used that to their advantage with cuts on the opposite side.
3:16 All the momentum in this game is with the 49ers. Matthew Stafford is trying to go deep, and Emmanuel Moseley is there for the interception. They mark it at the place of capture.
It is time for the offense to continue.
3:20 Brandon Aiyuk with a big fall in the second and the 49ers will open the 4th quarter with a punt.
3:23 Robbie Gould with a 47-yard punt to support Los Angeles against its 18.
3:30 The 49ers defense was all over Matthew Stafford in the second half. What a turnaround. DeMeco Ryans brings more pressure, and the front dominates.
49ers with the ball all alone 23.
3:43 The 49ers offense drives the ball to the Rams 22 and Jimmy Garoppolo throws an interception to Jalen Ramsey. Garoppolo was trying to get the ball to George Kittle, but the pitch was behind the near end and Ramsey flipped the ball into the air and was able to stay with him and catch up in the end zone.
Why not just stick with the race there?
3:52 Los Angeles was running for 92 yards on 9 plays, Matthew Stafford finding Cooper Kupp in the back corner of the end zone to give the Rams the lead.
The 49ers had all the momentum on their side before Garoppolo’s interception.
3:59 The 49ers offense can’t help and Garoppolo is sacked on the third down. Bad time for Colton McKivitz to finally call.
4:01 The 49ers defense forces a punt. One more opportunity for the offense to come.
4:02 Jimmy Garoppolo will have to go 88 yards with no downtime to force overtime.
4:07 Incredible. Garoppolo hits Aiyuk, Jennings and Deebo Samuel to send the ball to the Rams 14. In the second and fifth seconds, he finds Jennings all alone in midfield to tie this game at 24. WOW!
4:11 Arik Armstead with Matthew Stafford’s sack, and this game goes into overtime.
Where else would you like to be right now?
4:29 The 49ers drive him deep into the red zone but fail to hit him. Robbie Gould hits a 24-yard field goal to give San Francisco a 27-24 lead.
The game is now on the shoulders of the defense.
